“Veere di Wedding” banned in Pakistan, due to “Vulgar Content”?
The Central Board of Film Censors (CBFC) has banned an upcoming Bollywood Film “Veere Di Wedding” from releasing in Pakistan. The film was scheduled to release on June 1.
According to sources, the Sonam Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor film has been banned due to vulgar content and sexual dialogues in the film.
All members of the CBFC came to a unanimous decision to withdraw their application to release the film in Pakistan after witnessing the claims.
Although this is not a new act done by Pakistan, the country has banned films before for various reasons. However, banning this movie has raised many questions especially from the female community in Pakistan. Amongst the previous movies banned, Fukrey, Murder, Hate Story were not on the list. These movies are well known for not only vulgarity but also nudity. These movies contain vulgar jokes, inappropriate language, and nudity. Yet these movies were screened in the cinemas of Pakistan.
Those movies have portrayed vulgarity and nudity by a dominant male character. Male characters referred to women as materials in those movies, whereas, Veere Di Wedding is an all-female cast. The story revolves around four female friends, in which they depict what true friendship is.
While giving an interview, a senior member of CBFC said,
“THIS FILM IS NOT ACCEPTABLE IN OUR SOCIETY DUE TO ITS VULGARITY AND SEXUAL DIALOGUES SPOKEN BY THE FOUR GIRLS AND SO, WE DECIDED TO BAN IT.”
“Dialogues spoken by the four girls”. I guess this was the main reason for the ban because the dialogues were spoken by girls. If the same words would be spoken by guys, then maybe the movie would have been supported in the country.
Let’s face the facts, no matter how much women are given the right and the privilege to study, women in our society will still be counted as minors. As per the Pakistani society, bold women are not considered “Good Women”. This is really saddening that a developing country like Pakistan still faces an issue of gender dominance.
