The First Transgender Superhero to Appear on ‘Supergirl’
Comic Con 2018 keeps presenting goodies even after it has ended. The latest to come out of the convention is the news that tv’s first transgender superhero will appear on the upcoming fourth season of the live-action tv show Supergirl. Nicole Maines is a transgender activist and actress that will play the role of Nia Nal or “Dreamer”.
After the announcement was made, she went on to say “It seems only fitting that we have a trans superhero for trans kids to look up to.”
This is the first time a transgender superhero will appear on television and the character has been described as “a soulful young transgender woman with a fierce drive to protect others.”
The tv show is based on the DC Comics superhero, Kara Danvers, who is Superman’s cousin from Krypton and is played by actress Melissa Benoist in the tv show. Nia will be introduced as a new reporter at CatCo Worldwide Media, the company where Supergirl works, and will become a new friend of the Kryptonian superhero.
“I want fans to take away an understanding of trans people. We can be anybody, we can be who we want, we can be superheroes – because in many ways we are,” said Nicole about the historic moment.
