Pakistan’s First Transgender News Anchor
Kohenoor News made history be being the first news channel to hire a transgender person as a news anchor when they signed on Marvia Malik. Marvia is a determined and ambitious girl who has a bachelor’s degree, is also currently working on her masters in arts degree. Malik has always been goal-oriented and has dreamt about being more than just a singer or dancer since she was a child.
Her main goal is to bring about change in the society for her community and raise awareness as well as work to get her people the rights they deserve. Pakistan has been sorely disappointing towards the transgender community as promises are made but never fulfilled. Marvia is here to change that and change the way people treat transgender people.
“There’s nothing transgender people can’t do; we’re educated, have degrees, but no opportunities, no encouragement. I want to change this.”
She also became the first transgender model to walk the ramp at PSFW in Lahore this year. She has been getting modelling offers but she wants to work as an activist and help her people. She always wanted to grow up and become a lawyer or a journalist which is why she is now working to make it a law that transgenders should also have a part of the family’s assets as any other boy or girl child does.
Marvia has faced judgement, criticism, hate, disrespect and many more struggles that are unfortunately common for the transgender community of Pakistan. Her aim is to fix that attitude and bring change in our society. This is only the first step and there is a lot more to be done before transgenders can stand beside us equally but the initiative has been taken which is nothing short of spectacular.
