Pakistani Student Amongst Victims of Recent School Shooting in Texas

Ten people have been killed and 10 others injured after a student opened fire at a Texas high school in Santa Fe, Texas of United States. Amongst the ten killed was Sabika Sheikh who was a Pakistani exchange student who was studying in Santa Fe through an exchange program called Kennedy-Lugar Youth Exchange and Study programme (YES).
With less than a month until going home to her friends and family, Sabika Sheikh, a YES exchange student from Pakistan, was killed in the #SantaFeHighSchool shooting. If this had happened to me when I was on YES in Jordan it would be “terrorism”-why is it different when it’s here pic.twitter.com/CeozGAVSRN

Megan Lysaght who is the program manager of American Councils for International Education stated, “It is with the greatest sadness in my heart that one of our YES students, Sabika Sheikh of Pakistan, was killed today in the school shooting in Santa Fe, Texas. Please know that the YES program is devastated by this loss and we will remember Sabika and her families in our thoughts and prayers. We will have a moment of silence in her memory today.”
The Pakistani Embassy in Washington, D.C. also posted about the tragic news on their official Twitter page:

The attacker, who was arrested and charged with murder, was identified as Dimitrios Pagourtzis, a 17-year-old pupil at Santa Fe High School. He allegedly used a shotgun and a revolver taken from his father, who legally owned the weapons. Texas Governor Greg Abbott said the teenager “gave himself up” because “he didn’t have the courage to commit the suicide”. We offer our most sincere condolences to not only Sheikh’s family but the family of all those who were affected by this heinous act of terrorism because yes, it was purely an act of terrorism.
