Pakistani Australian Engineer Wins Commonwealth Young Person Of The Year Award
Usman Iftikhar is a Pakistani-Australian engineer that got his Bachelor’s degree from Ghulam Ishaq Khan (GIK) Institute of Engineering Sciences and Technology after which he went to Australia’s University of Wollongong to complete his Masters. He was awarded the prestigious Commonwealth Young Person of the Year award at London’s Queen Elizabeth II Centre in a forum. The award was presented by none other than Prince Harry of Wales who recently became the youth ambassador for Commonwealth.
He won the award for launching the programme Catalysr, which was established to help refugees and migrants in Australia cultivate their skills for the purpose of earning. He had the idea after he himself faced trouble finding job opportunities after his Masters in Australia. He wanted to help the refugees who face more difficulty than anyone else in finding jobs or doing businesses.
Iftikhar said, “Our approach is to provide an alternate pathway to people and unleash their untapped potential to help change the landscape not just for them but also their communities.
