Freida Pinto’s Thoughts on Bollywood’s #MeToo Movement

Ten years after Slumdog Millionaire made her a global star, Freida Pinto returned to her hometown of Mumbai, India for the premiere of her new film Love Sonia. The movie is inspired by actual events, centering on Sonia (played by Mrunal Thakur), who is taken from her Indian village and turned into a sex worker.
Considering the subject is heavily related to the current #MeToo movement sweeping the world, the actress spoke about it. “I refuse to work with someone that I know is a repeat offender. I wish I could do the same here (in India). The whole MeToo movement in the West was possible because there was a lot of support and a lot of research went into it. We all know who the people are in India,” Pinto said.
She then mentions how the movement started differently and took off in Hollywood successfully because there were people ready to support and encourage the victims when they came out. She talked about how the journalist who broke the story on Harvey Weinstein put his career on the line just to do the right thing. “You tell me one journalist in India who would do that and put his career on the line,” said the Slumdog Millionaire actress.
Pinto also pointed out that the actresses who came out in Hollywood had the advantage of not working at the moment, “The girls that came out first after the #MeToo movement were the girls who had experienced something and were not working already. The girls that are active here came out much later. The known actresses should be grateful and thankful to the ones who had the courage to come out.”
