Even though a Muslim girl has won the pageant Miss England, there has never been a hijabi woman in the contest at all. The Birmingham born Maria Mehmood is breaking the rules and the glass ceiling by becoming the first woman to compete in the pageant. She has yet to be finalized but once she wins the final round, she will officially be in the Miss England pageant.

The psychology student is currently taking part in the Miss Birmingham pageant and has progressed ahead amazingly. Her family and friends have offered unending support for her to follow her dreams. She said that she wants to work as a social worker and challenge the stereotypes Muslim women face.

“Muslims are associated with negative things like terrorism. I’m determined to do my bit to challenge those views.”
