Empowerment of Women

Women all over the world have to face many hardships and struggles even while simply walking down the street. In Pakistan, just the mention of women’s issues or gender equality gets people riled up. Most people rush to defend the patriarchy that is prevalent in this country. That is the kind of mind set we need to recondition in order to bring about change in our society.
Young girls when they go to school are introduced to the toxic nature of this patriarchal culture. Facing judgement like “You are not built to play sports like men are” can affect a young girl’s psyche immensely. We are taught from the very beginning that either we are not as strong as men or that we do not need to focus on studies since all we have to do is to get married and build a home.
Unfortunately, this only gets worse when women go off to college, if they even get to go. Higher studies and college education is a privilege not offered to every woman here. And even then, they face harassment from male teachers, classmates or other staff members. Safety and freedom is not provided as it should be.
Women do not get the luxury of making choices that come easily and without any consequences for men. We cannot chase our dreams if they are not deemed “appropriate” by the society hence having to limit ourselves. If a woman works, she is either seen as without morals or any family values. Women are also not offered the same positions as men or do not get equal pay.
We have to make sure that we bring up young men in such a manner that they learn to respect and treat women equally. That is what is essential to ensure that the women of our society are empowered. As our great leader Quaid-e-Azam once said, “No nation can rise to the height of glory unless your women are side by side with you.”
