Celebrating Chester Bennington, An Icon of a Generation

Millions around the world were shocked when the news of Chester Bennington’s death broke out in July of 2017. The Linkin Park singer was an icon of the American music industry that many people loved and respected not only for his singing talent but for all the struggles he had overcome. Unfortunately, it was not all fine as people thought since he ended up taking his own life, leaving behind devastated family members, friends and fans.
Linkin Park released their debut album Hybrid Theory in 2000 and it quickly became one of the best-selling albums of all time. Since then, the band and Chester became the voice of a generation. We all grew up listening to his soulful, gruff voice talking about all the pain he felt. Many who were dealing with their own demons related with his pain and used his music to cope. Papercut, Crawling, In The End, Numb, Bleed It Out, and Somewhere I Belong are some of the band’s most popular songs and also the ones that did best on charts.
Their songs always talked about dealing with life’s hardships and how it can make a person feel. With their last album before Chester’s death, One More Light, they ventured into the electric pop genre. The title song of the album had Chester crooning about hope and the song is different to anything the band has done before.
Chester did not have an easy life, experiencing things like his parent’s divorce, sexual assault, substance abuse and a generally rough childhood. The singer would have turned 42 today and has definitely left a hole in the music industry and the hearts of his fans. We can only hope that other people facing a hard life can learn from him and find the strength to get better. His death is a reminder that you have to remain hopeful even in the worst of times because, in his own words, “Who cares if one more light goes out? Well I do.”
