Careem Faces Cyber Attack
After Facebook’s data breach controversy in which about 87 million users of the social media site had their data stolen by Cambridge Analytica which was working for President Donald Trump at the time, it seems that every organization is in danger of similar cyber attacks. Careem is the latest victim of the cyber crime where they suffered a data breach in January of this year.
Dear Customers, we have identified a cyber incident that took place in January 2018 involving unauthorized access to the system we use to store data. Our wider security protocol keep passwords encrypted and credit card details on a separate system. pic.twitter.com/rkcpf671ct

The statement says that it were their customers’ names, email addresses, phone numbers and trip data that were stolen but not credit card information. “There is no evidence that your password or credit card number have been compromised. Customers’ credit card information is kept on an external third-party PCP-compliant server. A PCP server uses highly secure protocols and is employed by international banks around the globe to protect financial information”.
The breach happened in the UAE so it is not sure if Pakistani customers were also affected but they most likely were. A spokeperson for the company stated also that “at the time of the attack on January 14, Careem had 14 million customers worldwide and 558,000 captains on its platform. Those who have signed up since then are not affected by the breach.”
And as to why it took them so long to reveal the breach, the company said, “Cybercrime investigations are immensely complicated and take time. We wanted to make sure we had the most accurate information before notifying people.” They also gave a list of tips that could help protect your data more:
After the severe consequences Facebook’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg faced in face of his company’s data breach, it remains to be seen whether Careem will also suffer similar or different consequences.
