The Billboard Music Awards took place this Sunday on 20th May and the night was not only full of great music but some of the most memorable moments of the western music industry. Artists performed their hearts out, winners took home trophies, and some of the most iconic musicians hung out and had fun. Here are some of the highlights of the thrilling night of music:

1. Kelly Clarkson’s speech and medley

Starting the night with a powerful speech regarding the recent tragedy of the Santa Fe school shooting, host Kelly Clarkson proceeded to first touch people’s hearts by urging them to take action instead of moments of silence. “I’m so sick of the moment of silence because it’s not working,” she said tearing up. “How about a moment of action, a moment of change. Why don’t we change what’s happening?” She then went ahead and cheered up the audience’s somber mood by performing a medley of songs by the artists nominated like Khalid’s “Young, Dumb & Broke”, Taylor Swift’s “Look What You Made Me Do” and Kendrick Lamar’s “Humble”.

2. Janet Jackson receiving Icon Award

Janet Jackson was this year’s recipient of the Billboard Icon Award for which she gave a glamorous and fiery performance that had the audience jumping to their feet and enjoying themselves. She then amazed the public even more by presenting a heartfelt speech about the #MeToo movement

3. Taylor Swift’s empowering moment

Taylor Swift gave an inspiring speech empowering women and other young people wanting to become big artists like herself when she won the awards Top Selling Album and Top Female Artist.

After performing his hit single “In My Blood” Shawn Mendez made another appearance by performing “Youth” with Khalid in a touching tribute to the victims of the Santa Fe school shooting.

5. BTS’s debut performance

After winning the Top Social Artist trophy for the second year in a row, the Korean pop group BTS wowed the audience with their debut performance of new single “Fake Love” from their album Love Yourself: Tear. Becoming the first ever Korean artists to do so, BTS definitely won hearts all around as proven by the huge screaming crowd of fans.

6. Salt-N-Pepa closing the show

One of the most anticipated of the night, was the performance by hip hop artists Salt-N-Pepa which brought the house down as they featured female band En Vogue. The night was made even more thrilling and exciting with such a strong ending.
