10 Classic Horror Movies That Were Based on True Stories

Watching horror movies can be scary but at the end of it we walk off, praising or trashing the acting and writing skills. We end up being entertained and then move on to watch another movie. But, what if we told you that some of the iconic horror movies, like the Exorcist or Jaws, were actually based on true stories? The movies that you saw just for entertainment purposes actually happened in some way in some part of the world. Here are some of the most popular and best horror movies that were based on real stories:
1. Child’s Play (1988)
The 1988 classic that made children hate dolls every where was actually based on a story about a boy in Florida that got a doll as a gift in the 1900s. Sounds sweet right? As it turned out, Robert the Doll, was actually a life-sized voodoo doll. At this moment, the doll is encased in a glass case to stop anyone from messing with it.
2. Silence of the Lambs (1991)
The charismatic character of the cannibal doctor Hannibal Lecter, played by Anthony Hopkins in the 1991 classic, quickly became a cult favorite. The real story behind this character is that of a Mexican surgeon, Dr. Alfredo Ballí Treviño, that killed his friend, lover and possibly other hitchhikers.
3. Zodiac (2007)
The real Zodiac Killer was a serial killer that killed seven people and sent the authorities letters bragging about his victims as well as taunting them. The killer was never caught and the case remains unsolved to this day. This David Fincher film was about Jake Gyllenhaal’s character Robert Graysmith trying to find the infamous serial killer.
4. A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)
The writer of the classic thriller, Wes Craven, revealed that he got the inspiration for Freddy Krueger from a news story about local people in Laos dying because of how afraid they got in their sleep.
5. The Hills Have Eyes (1977)
This movie was about a group of cannibals that lived in the hills of Nevada and murdered a bunch of people. It is thought that the story was based upon the Sawney Bean clan that supposedly lived in a cave in Scotland during the 16th century. There are tales about them robbing and eating thousands of villagers.
6. Jaws (1975)
Before Sharknado there was Jaws, a classic and cinematic masterpiece of a franchise. The story was inspired by the horrific events of 1916 when a Great White attacked and killed five people off the Jersey Shore.
7. The Conjuring (2013)
Since Ed and Lorraine Warren were actually a ghost hunting couple, it makes sense that this was actually true. In the 1970s, the Perron family of Rhode Island dealt with demonic hauntings in their house for around nine years. That is what inspired this first installment in another good horror franchise. The demonic doll, Annabelle, introduced in the movie is also real and still locked in a glass case for protection of others.
8. The Exorcist (1973)
The most popular and one of the top highest grossing horror films of all time, the Exorcist, was also based on true events. In the year 1949, in St. Louis, a young boy named Roland Doe became possessed with evil spirits and had to be exorcised. Unlike the movie, however, the exorcism in real life took many months to actually start working.
9. The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974)
This horror movie had many cringe-worthy scenes full of gore that made people thank God that such a messed up creature didn’t exist in real life. But the events of this movie, and the violent killer Leatherface, were actually based on the true story of Ed Gein. Ed Gein was a serial killer who murdered and cut up two women, but if that was not enough, he also made furniture by taking body parts from a graveyard.
10. The Amityville Horror (1979)
The real tale that this movie was based upon was about the Lutz family that moved into the Amityville home in New York City around December of 1975. Just like in the movie, the house was haunted by the murders that took place the year before. This story has gained a lot of popularity, and some are even skeptical, but it sure is an interesting tale.
