Marvel’s New Superhero is…Shah Rukh Khan?
When it comes to superheroes, the standard is set as a handsome young “white” male. But in recent years, the stereotype has been broken and superheroes of color like Black Panther changed the game, as proven by the blockbuster numbers. But we have yet to see a brown Marvel superhero. Seems like that is about to change.
Apparently, the King of Bollywood is heading to Hollywood now. Or at least Stephen Wacker, the Vice President of Creative Development of Marvel Studios, has his sights on SRK an Indian superhero. “I think in the next few years Marvel is going to try to create characters with a real toehold in Indian culture,” he said in an interview recently. “Try for authenticity that can go as far as finding Indian talent.”
So does that mean King Khan will join Captain America and Iron Man’s universe? “If we make Indian content, we have to put Shah Rukh Khan. He has to be in it,” Wacker said. “We want to find a way to create characters that have a home in this world so we can bring Indian culture to the core North American Marvel fan. Let them understand a different part of the world too. I think that’s going to be an exciting thing for Marvel. My hope is that the fan in India feels just as much part of the Marvel universe as some kid in New York.”
This, of course, would not be the first time that the actor has played superhero, as he played one in 2011’s Ra. One.
