Luxury Pret Wear Launched by Pakistan’s First Ever Transgender Designer
Maya Zaman has made history as the first Pakistani transgender designer to launch a luxury pret clothing line named ‘Surkhaabi’.
She left her home when she was just 17. Later, she moved from Karachi to Islamabad to make something of herself. She enrolled in a university to pursue a business degree. Due to harassment and bullying, she left feeling hopeless and self-conscious. But she soon realized that she had to persevere and face the unfortunate adversities of her life. After completing her BBA degree, she got a diploma in fashion designing. That is how she met Fouzia who is now her business partner and close friend.
“For a long time, I felt being a transgender in Pakistani society was a curse; something to be shameful for.”
“The unique thing about ‘Surkhaabi’ is that it’s for women of all ages and sizes. The idea behind it is to promote body positivity and diversity and discourage body shaming,” said the 24-year-old inspirational woman. “This is a moment of pride for the transgender community, which is proving that they will not be left behind. All we need is acceptance, opportunity and trust.”
The brand has hired transgenders to work for positions such as graphic designing, photography, stitching etc. As to why she chose the name ‘Surkhaabi’, Zaman shared that it represented the elegance, freedom and uniqueness of Pakistani women. “Fashion is not about being perfect. It’s about having fun and loving yourself.”
